Why Iron Matters for Babies Starting Solids

Boosting baby’s iron intake can feel like one more thing to think about when introducing solids. The good news? It doesn’t need to be complicated.

When it comes to your little one’s meals, it’s helpful to balance simplicity with nutrients that support their growth and development. While there’s no need to overthink every meal, being mindful of key nutrients can go a long way.

Iron is one of the most important nutrients for babies, supporting:

  • Brain development

  • Cognitive function

  • Healthy growth

  • Oxygen transport in the body

Around 6 months, babies’ iron stores begin to decrease, which is why introducing iron-rich foods becomes important during the early solids journey.

This iron-rich lentil purée recipe combines red lentils, sweet potato, and spinach to create a creamy, nourishing meal that’s both simple and packed with nutrients.

Iron-Rich Lentil Purée Recipe for Babies

Starting age: Around 9 months
(Some families introduce lentils earlier depending on tolerance.)

Prep time: 10 minutes
Cooking time: 20 minutes
Total time: 30 minutes

This lentil purée is naturally rich in iron thanks to red lentils and spinach.

  • Red lentils are an excellent plant-based iron source.

  • Sweet potatoes provide vitamin C, which helps the body absorb iron more efficiently.

  • Spinach adds additional iron and nutrients.

Together they create a smooth, flavorful purée that’s easy for babies to enjoy.

Ingredients for This Lentil Baby Purée

Makes 4 servings (about 6 oz each)

  • 1/4 cup red lentils
  • 1 cup water
  • 1 small sweet potato, peeled and diced
  • 1/2 cup spinach leaves, washed and chopped
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground cumin (optional)
  • 1/4 teaspoon turmeric (optional)

How to Make Lentil Purée for Baby

Step 1: Rinse the lentils

Rinse the red lentils thoroughly under cold water and drain.

Step 2: Cook the lentils

In a small saucepan, combine the lentils and water (or vegetable broth).
Bring to a boil over medium heat.

Step 3: Add sweet potato

Reduce the heat to low and add the diced sweet potato.
Cover and simmer for 15-20 minutes, until the lentils and sweet potato are tender.

Step 4: Add spinach

Add the chopped spinach to the saucepan and cook for 2-3 minutes, until wilted.

Step 5: Optional spices

Stir in ground cumin and turmeric for additional flavor and nutritional benefits.

Step 6: Blend until smooth

Remove from heat and let the mixture cool slightly.

Transfer to a blender or food processor and blend until smooth and creamy.

Step 7: Cool before serving

Allow the purée to cool completely before serving to your baby.

Storage Tips for Baby Lentil Purée

This recipe works well for meal prep.

You can:

  • Store the purée in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days

  • Freeze portions in ice cube trays for convenient baby servings later

Simply thaw and gently warm before serving.

When Can Babies Eat Lentils?

Lentils can be introduced once babies start solids, but some families prefer introducing them a little later.

Because legumes can sometimes be harder to digest, many parents introduce them around 9 months.

That said, some babies tolerate lentils well earlier, even around 6 months, especially when blended into a smooth purée.

As with any new food:

  • Introduce gradually

  • Watch for signs of sensitivities or allergies

  • Offer small portions at first

When in doubt, your pediatrician can help guide what works best for your baby.

A Small Note Before Introducing New Foods

Consult with your pediatrician before introducing new foods and for personalized advice regarding your baby’s nutritional needs.

Every baby develops at their own pace, and feeding approaches can vary depending on your family’s routine and your baby’s readiness.
